Sweet Dixie is a semi-sweet, fruit forward white Muscadine wine made from the white Carlos Muscadines. “Dixie” is the Landry family female Labrador retriever. Muscadine grapes are native to “Dixie,” a historical name for the Southern United States. Seeing the connection to her name, the south and muscadines, we thought it appropriate to name this Muscadine wine, “Sweet Dixie.”
The Carlos Muscadine is a bronze-skinned Vitis rotundifolia (muscadine) variety developed in North Carolina and released in 1970 by the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station. It was bred to be high-yielding, disease-resistant, and suitable for wine production—especially in hot, humid regions. Carlos became one of the most widely planted muscadine grapes in the Southeast, prized for its sweet, golden-bronze juice ideal for white muscadine wines, jellies, and juices.
The vine is known for its vigor, cold hardiness, and strong natural resistance to Pierce’s Disease and fungal pathogens, making it well-suited to Southern climates. The resulting wines are typically fruit-forward and sweet, with a distinctive character rooted in Southern tradition.
At Landry Vineyards in West Monroe, Louisiana, the team cultivates Carlos Muscadine grapes to produce their signature Muscadine wines: Sweet Dixie Muscadine, Country Muscadine, and Peach Muscadine.
Chill it well before serving—white muscadine is best cold, especially on hot Southern days or with spicy foods.
